TimeMachineEditor

TimeMachineEditor
TimeMachineEditor is a software for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard that lets you change the default one-hour backup interval of Time Machine.
You can change the interval or create a more sophosticated scheduling (see screenshot below).

This is useful if you don’t need to backup every hour and don’t want the performance penalty. This is also especially useful if you manipulate lots of data within one hour as you would spend the whole day backing up.

How does it work?
TimeMachineEditor merely updates a system configuration file to change the Time Machine scheduling.
Nothing is installed in your system and you can easily revert back to the default settings (using the ‘Show Default Settings’ menu item from the ‘Settings’ menu).

Once you have changed the scheduling, you can still use the Time Machine preference pane from “System Preferences” as you did before. However the next backup date in the Time Machine preference pane may not be correct, this is just the user interface not being aware of the new scheduling and can be ignored without risk.
TimeMachineEditor is free software. Use at your own risk.

FAQ
Q. Should I turn the big switch from the Time Machine preference pane to OFF?
A. You should keep it ON as you’d expect. OFF means no automatic backup.

Q. Do I need to keep TimeMachineEditor running all the time?
A. No. You just need to use TimeMachineEditor when you want to change the settings.

Q. Time Machine is not making backups at the correct time.
A. If you see too many backups, they are probably triggered by the events (disks being mounted or wake from sleep). You should try to disable them.
If you changed the backup interval and you’re seeing too few backups, you should enable the ‘wake from sleep’ event. This will ensure backups are made even when the computer is asleep during schedule time.

Q. How do I uninstall TimeMachineEditor?
A. That’s really easy: you just need to trash the application, nothing else is installed in your system. However you may want to use TimeMachineEditor one last time to revert to the default settings.
What’s new?
- You can now add “hourly” calendar intervals
