Knit hat stabs you in the head if you don't smile
Interactive designer Lauren McCarthy used Arduino to make a wooly torture device hat that she calls the Happiness Hat — it has sensors that detect when you're smiling — when you're not smiling, it sticks a metal spike into your head. Here's a short description from her web site:
I find this a little more than creepy - gives new meaning to put on a happy face- or else!

'Aperture X' Scheduled for Launch Before End of Year?
Tuesday October 27, 2009 11:01 AM EST
Written by Eric SlivkaHardmac reports that Apple is preparing to launch an updated version of Aperture, branded as "Aperture X", at some point in the relatively near future. The company is reportedly shooting for a release by the end of November, although it may slip into December.According to our sources, with Aperture X, Apple decided to align its name with Mac OS X, and should release this new evolution of its Pro-oriented photo editing application at the end of November and fore sure before year's end. We did not receive any additional details about this new version, but it seems that it will be able to benefit from Snow Leopard as well as be more multi-core aware.

Iphone Platform
Jim Dalrymple on the iPhone Platform
Jim Dalrymple:
The next version of the iPhone is already well underway and it will have cooler features than the existing models. Apple created a platform, not just a piece of hardware that uses the same old software. That’s a huge distinction.
If you want a parallel, try this. Apple had the most successful music player on the market with the iPod mini. Any other company executive would have given their right arm to have that device. What did Apple do? It dumped it. Apple stopped making its top-selling iPod and introduced the iPod nano in its place. Just when the competitors thought they had Apple in their sights, Apple completely changed the game.
Right. You know who thinks the iPhone 3GS stinks? Steve Jobs. No one is working harder on an “iPhone 3GS killer” than Apple.

MacInTouch: timely news and tips about Apple Macintosh, iTunes, iPhone and more...
Tuesday, October 20, 2009 12:18 EDTApple
Apple updated its iMac, MacBook and Mac Mini products today and introduced an innovative mouse. Excerpts from the press releases:Apple today introduced the new wireless Magic Mouse, the first mouse to use Apple's revolutionary Multi-Touch technology. Pioneered on iPhone, iPod touch and Mac notebook trackpads, Multi-Touch allows customers to navigate using intuitive finger gestures. Instead of mechanical buttons, scroll wheels or scroll balls, the entire top of the Magic Mouse is a seamless Multi-Touch surface. Magic Mouse comes standard with the new iMac and will be available as a Mac accessory at just $69. [...]
Magic Mouse features a seamless touch-sensitive enclosure that allows it to be a single or multi-button mouse with advanced gesture support. Using intuitive gestures, users can easily scroll through long documents, pan across large images or swipe to move forward or backward through a collection of web pages or photos. Magic Mouse works for left or right handed users and multi-button or gesture commands can be easily configured from within System Preferences.
The Magic Mouse laser tracking engine provides a smooth, consistent experience across more surfaces than a traditional optical tracking system. Magic Mouse uses Bluetooth wireless capabilities to create a clean, cable-free desk top and its secure wireless connection works from up to 10 meters away. To extend battery performance, Magic Mouse includes an advanced power management system that works with Mac OS X to automatically switch to low power modes during periods of inactivity. The wireless Magic Mouse is powered by two AA batteries which are included.
Magic Mouse comes standard with the new iMac and is available at the end of October through the Apple Store (www.apple.com), at Apple's retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers for a suggested retail price of $69. Magic Mouse requires Mac OS X Leopard version 10.5.8 or later.

Sympathy for the Lamprey
"Lampreys don't charm most people," begins a pamphlet from the Minnesota Sea Grant.
Truer words, my environmental research friends, truer words.
Yes, it's hard out there for a lamprey. Already cursed with a face not even their mothers (who die shortly after spawning) could love, these fish were further saddled with 50 years of bad PR brought on when one invasive species, the sea lamprey, moved into the Great Lakes and wreaked a trail of parasitic havoc from New York to Minnesota. Lost in the shuffle were several native lamprey species, some of which aren't even parasitic. Despite living in the Great Lakes for 1000s of years in co-evolved cooperation with other fish, non-invasive lamprey have paid the price for their cousin's misdeeds.

Forget cars, check out Bikes for Clunkers
Read all the Green news to make you and Mother Nature happy.
The government’s Cash for Clunkers program had Americans streaming in to local car dealerships over the summer as drivers looked to cash in on their rusty gas-guzzlers, but not everyone thought the program lived up to its green potential. Joe Doebele, owner of Portland’s Joe Bike, decided to put a Mother Earth-approved spin on the popular car trade-in program by offering a discount on new bikes to people who traded in their old bicycle or car. The “Bikes for Clunkers” program aimed to not only get polluting vehicles off the road, but get more cars off the road in general by encouraging people to ditch their four wheel habit in favor of two wheel one. Doebele also teamed up with the American Lung Association, which collects donated clunkers and provides customers with a receipt that can be used for a discount at Joe Bike.
Bikes for Clunkers was originally intended as only a month-long promotion, but, because of the program’s immense popularity, Doebele has decided to run it through the end of the year.

Adobe Systems on Friday introduced a new Photoshop app for iPhone users that lets them edit photos from both their phone and their online library on Photoshop.com.
The app is free of charge and offers tools such as cropping, image rotation, color controls, and simple one-touch filter effects that can change the look and feel of shots all at once. It also features undo and redo controls so that if users make a mistake, or want to revert back to the original, it takes just a few taps.

Macs in 12% of US households, majority also have Windows PCs
By Chris Foresman | Last updated October 5, 2009 5:18 PM CTThe number of US households that own a Mac has increased to 12 percent. That's up from just 9 percent in 2008, according to the latest "Household Penetration Study" from market research firm NPD. The survey confirms recent trends that suggest Mac use is on the rise, though those sources don't always agree on the exact number. And, interestingly enough, 85 percent of Mac-using households also own Windows PCs.
